A while ago we had the pleasure of attending the launch of Saz Mifsud's wonderful scarf collection. A student of Textile Print at the University of the Creative Arts in the UK, Sarah (or Saz) uses intricate patterns in her prints to create beautiful pieces and accessories, namely her silk print scarves. At only 21 years of age, Saz Mifsud is surely one to watch!
Set in the quaint Café Riche at Birgu, this evening was a colourful affair and the perfect introduction to Saz Mifsud's collection. Here's the lovely Sarah sorting through some of her collection on sale that night.
We managed to sneak in a little interview with Sarah as we were intrigued to more about the patterns and how they came about. Here's what she had to say about her creative process:
"Some prints start from a painting, others from an inspiring photo, relating to a particular theme. My current collections are three – the Mata Hari collection is inspired by the life and clothing of the exotic dancer and accused spy Mata Hari. She was inspired by colours and jewels from the East and this follows through in the collection. The Nature Abstract collection is about softer earth tones, with hints of deep purple, burnt orange and green. It is about looking at nature through hazy light – seeing part nature – florals and foliage, part abstract."
The materials used for the scarves are mainly silks with a few cotton silks used too.
"Prints are digitally produced on silk. A love for natural fibres is what drives me to create printed scarves on these fabrics. Silks include: Silk habotai – a thin silk with a shine, silk chiffon – a sheer silk, silk crepe – a thicker, more textured silk, and silk crepe satin – which is crepe with a subtle sheen. I also use cotton silk, as it offers that same luxe feel of silk with the thickness of cotton. It is the perfect blend of both."

The scarves on sale were carefully wrapped in gorgeous paper matching your scarves print! I (Claire) myself bought one from the Intertwined Collection. I can't wait for colder weather to kick in to wear it (and blog about it, of course).
"The scarf you bought is part of the Intertwined Collection. This collection came about through the amalgamation of the curves plants form – taken from scraps of old lace, with the curve of a deformed spine. The idea is that a deformity can still be beautiful. Your scarf is called ‘Mirror Spine’ and is a perfect example of this."
